Pastor's Corner – October 6th, 2023
Last Sunday, we introduced a teaching series entitled, “Shut the Door”.
I didn’t intend for it to be a series; however, a series was certainly on God’s mind.
In the introductory message, we shared how even the smallest crack in a door will provide sufficient room for flies and mosquitos to slip into our houses. Once inside, these pests can feast for days on uncovered food as well as body parts. I suppose this is why they are called pests, and this is certainly why we do everything possible to keep them out; and the best way to keep them out is still to simply “shut the door”.
Our lives are similar to our homes. Too often, we give pests and people who act like pests, access to our time, our talent and our treasure simply because we leave our doors open to them. We sleep with our cell phones and respond to frivolous texts 24 hours a day. Isn’t it time to give those devices…and your mind… a rest? When you pull back your covers to settle down to a good night’s sleep tonight; why not sleep and allow your phone to sleep as well? Every text you receive, does not deserve to be read and a majority of the texts you read do not require a response, so stop filling up cyberspace with those little heart emojis.
Shut the door of your eyes to the obscene photos that some Facebook friend thinks you just have to see. Shut the door of your ears to the abusive gossip spread by friends who have nothing kind or lovely to share. Shut the door that allows people access to your calendar in order to fill it up with actions and activities that will mean nothing to you 10 minutes after you’ve done them.
